Every Pakistani parent has been there. The report card comes home. First position in the class. Mithai is ordered. Relatives are told. The child is praised. And then life moves on.
But a question rarely gets asked in that moment of celebration: what did that first position actually measure? What does it tell us about whether this child can think independently, solve an unfamiliar problem, or learn something new without being told exactly how?
Education is not simply literacy. At its highest level, it builds analytical capability: the ability to encounter information and process it independently rather than waiting to be told what to think.
The goal of education is not to fill a child with knowledge. It is to build the capacity to keep learning long after school ends.
The first reason is affordability. The second is relevance — children find school disconnected from anything meaningful. The third is perhaps the most alarming: increasingly, even educated Pakistani families are questioning the value of formal degrees.
Many private schools divide students into sections and give each section its own first, second, and third position. Every child can receive a top position. Parents celebrate. Nobody asks harder questions because the numbers look fine. The real test comes much later.
A child who scores well in an exam they memorised for is not the same as a child who understands. The difference becomes visible only when the exam is over and real life begins.

Pakistan’s education system rests on five pillars: the curriculum, the teaching methodology, the examination system, the teacher, and the educational institution. Every genuine reform has touched one of these while leaving the others unchanged. A system with misaligned pillars produces the same outcome regardless of which pillar you fix.
The deeper reason for this goes beyond structure. As one educator put it: It Is Not the Curriculum. It Is the Conditioning
Does my child understand what they are learning or are they performing what they have memorised? Can they explain a concept in their own words? Do they approach an unfamiliar problem with curiosity or do they immediately say they have not been taught this?
